Jeffrey E. Riley, CLU®, CFP® Elected to Society of Financial Service Professionals Board, to Emphasize ‘Youth Movement’

July 20, 2016

The Houston chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals (SFSP) elected our own Jeff Riley to serve on its board of directors. It was a typical day at the office when Jeff’s phone rang. It was the nominating chair asking Jeff if he’d be open to having his name put on the ballot.

“I was surprised,” Jeff said. “Having recently moved from Michigan, I considered myself largely unknown in Houston.”

But several years of service on the SFSP Southwest Michigan chapter’s board, and a term there as president, likely put him on the Houston chapter’s radar. Now, having been duly elected by the membership, he’s honored to help continue the organization’s work.

With some 11,000 members nationwide, SFSP has acted as the standard bearer for professionalism, continuing education and ethical guidance for financial service professionals for more than 80 years.

Among the board’s duties is approving speakers and topics as continuing education (CE) credit for those holding any of more than 20 recognized professional credentials in the financial services field—from certified public accountants (CPA) to Certified Financial Planners (CFP®) to accredited estate planners (AEP).

“We want to ensure we’re bringing content to our members that’s timely and relevant, with an eye to continuously building the knowledge and professionalism of our industry,” Jeff said.

In addition, Jeff wants to help start a youth movement in the organization.

“The average age of financial professionals is between 55 and 60. We need to make sure we have the next generation of advisors rising through the ranks, and that we’re offering them effective leadership and mentoring in the industry. The Millennial generation communicates a little differently. We have to evolve and adapt so that we can communicate with them and they can in turn communicate and help their clients understand the complex financial issues people face today.”

Ultimately, the purpose of SFSP’s work is aimed at the financial services client. This includes a code of conduct for members in which the interests of their clients must be put ahead of their own.

That’s the same philosophy Jeff and the rest of us at PARTNERSINWEALTH live out every day. For more information, helpful guidance or professional assistance with your financial big picture, we invite you to get to know us better. Please contact Jim Waters, CFP® at 713.964.4028 or
