James R. (Jim) Waters, CFP® Presented “Beyond Stock and Bond Investing”

August 9, 2013

This past Tuesday, August 6th, Jim Waters gave a talk at the River Oaks Country Club.  He spoke before the aptly named “Tuesday Breakfast Club”.   John J. Robinson, CPA, one of the members of this close-knit, long-standing club, asked Jim to enlighten the members about strategies to improve their investment portfolio and their overall financial situation.

Jim presented 4 investment opportunities that can potentially boost portfolio diversification.  Each option provides specialized exposure to an investment arena not generally covered by traditional stocks and bonds.

The 4 opportunities included:

  • The Houston Angel Network (http://www.houstonangelnetwork.org/) is a way to invest in early-stage businesses. Open to accredited investors, this organization allows individuals to gain access and invest in early-stage companies in numerous industries such as energy, life sciences and consumer goods.

  • Rockspring Capital (http://www.rockspringcap.com/) provides investors a reputable way to invest in land sites near metropolitan areas in Texas.  Rockspring’s all-cash acquisition strategy provides an attractive model for accredited investors looking to expand their exposure to real estate.

  • Crowdfunding, a hot topic in investment circles, is a rapidly growing arena.  New federal legislation and future SEC oversight may propel this form of business funding into the mainstream.  Crowdfunding organizations like Kickstarter.com and Indiegogo.com could open the door for smaller, non-accredited investors, to participate in early-stage business investing.

  • Purchasing retail investment property leased to large corporations, such as Walgreens, can potentially provide a long-term income stream while also participating in the long-term appreciation on the land.
